A former rugby international has gone on trial accused of eating sparrows, robins and other songbirds protected under law.
Dax criminal court in the southwest of France heard that Jean-Pierre Bastiat, 71, who was part of the 1977 France team that won the Five Nations tournament, was suspected of buying about 1,000 of the birds over six years.
Bernard Fargues, 68, was also in court and stands accused of poaching.
Prosecutors said Mr Farges illegally captured and killed 8,500 birds between 2013 and 2019 before having them plucked, frozen and sold 12 to a skewer for €30.
