Diners who leave food on their plate will be fined under a new Chinese law.
New legislation designed to support a government campaign against food waste will introduce fines for diners with eyes bigger than their stomachs.
It also bans the promotion of gluttony, for example through increasingly popular Chinese social media videos of eating contests, The Times reports.
President Xi Jinping last year launched the ‘clean plate’ movement, saying China “must have a sense of crisis when it comes to food security”.
The government’s focus on food security comes amid significant uncertainty in China’s future global trading relationships.
