And finally… sugar loaf
Ireland’s top court has ruled that US sandwich chain Subway uses too much sugar in its dough to meet the legal definition of bread.
In a dispute over VAT, the Supreme Court noted that Subway’s bread has a sugar content of 10 per cent of the weight of the flour included in the dough.
Under the Value Added Tax Act 1972, “fat, sugar and bread improver” in bread cannot exceed two per cent of the weight of the flour in the dough.
Mr Justice Donal O’Donnell said he could therefore not accept the “contention that the Subway heated sandwich contains ‘bread’ as defined, and therefore can be said to be food … rather than confectionery”.
