The head of a Scottish justice organisation has been profiled in a BBC Radio 4 programme.

Scotland’s Justice Warrior takes a look at the work of Karyn McCluskey, chief executive of Community Justice Scotland.

Community Justice Scotland provides advice to ministers and local government leaders to strengthen how public services, third sector and other partners work together to prevent and reduce further offending.

Discussing the organisation’s work, Ms McCluskey previously wrote: “Do you want to increase sentences – lock people up for longer to teach them a lesson never to do it again?

“It’s an understandable instinct, but relying on the deterrent effect of prison sentences as a tactic to reduce offending not only flies in the face of all the evidence but would make the problem worse, swelling the prison population further, straining already stretched resources and increasing the pressure on the public purse. Which would be the least of the problems we would face.”
