Double celebration at special Faculty/SEMLA event

Lawyers and law students are being invited to a special event to formally launch a new Faculty of Advocates scholarship and to mark the first anniversary of the Scottish Ethnic Minorities Lawyers’ Association (SEMLA).
The evening will feature a keynote speech by Justice Secretary Humza Yousaf. The date is Wednesday, 14 November. The venue is the Laigh Hall, Parliament House, Edinburgh.
The Lord Hope of Craighead Scholarship aims to make the devilling process for aspiring advocates as widely as accessible as possible, and to help people into the wider legal profession. It is funded by a voluntary levy on earnings, and the vast majority of practising members of Faculty are contributing.
SEMLA was launched last year with the support of the Faculty and the Law Society of Scotland. Its objective is to increase the representation of lawyers from ethnic minorities throughout the legal profession.
Other speakers at the free event include Gordon Jackson QC, Dean of Faculty, Naeema Sajid, partner at Aberdein Considine and a founding member of SEMLA, Roddy Dunlop QC, Faculty Treasurer and Christine McLintock (chair of the LawScot Foundation).
Chairing proceedings will be SEMLA’s founder, advocate Usman Tariq.
