Family loses 35-year-old battle over high hedge

A family who fought with their neighbours for more than three decades over a high hedge have been defeated.

Audrey Alexander’s fight against her neighbour over the hedge started 23 years ago but the seeds were sown 35 years ago when her aunt, the former owner, planted a vegetable garden which died in the shade of the giant hedge.

Ms Alexander, 54, relied on the High Hedges (Scotland) Act 2013 to get the leylandii at the bottom of her garden cut down to 6ft.

The act defines a “high hedge”, inter alia, as one which is over two metres above ground level.

However, Stirling Council ruled that her neighbour, Jeanette Robinson, can keep the massive hedge, which currently stands at 40ft, at 20ft.

Ms Alexander described the council’s decision as “disgraceful”.
