Justice Secretary comments on repeat violent victimisation review

The Scottish government has today published a review of national and international evidence on the extent, prevalence and nature of repeat violent victimisation.

Overall, evidence from national and international crime surveys shows that violent crime is disproportionately suffered by repeat victims.

The evidence also shows that repeat victims of violence tend to have particular characteristics. Most commonly, they are often young, male (except in the case of domestic violence), and from deprived socioeconomic backgrounds.

Justice Secretary Humza Yousaf said: “We are determined to root out persistent violence where it exists and I welcome this report which will help us – working with police, local authorities and others – to determine how best to further reduce violence, with fewer victims and still safer communities.

“We have invested more than £17 million in violence prevention since 2006-07, including funding the Scottish Violence Reduction Unit, Medics Against Violence and our No Knives Better Lives programme, as well as the Mentors in Violence Prevention programme delivery in schools.”
