Lady Rae to chair restorative justice event

Restorative justice will be the topic of discussion at a free event in Glasgow next week, chaired by Lady Rae.

Restorative Justice is a victim-sensitive process whereby all parties with a stake in a particular offence voluntarily come together to resolve how to deal with the aftermath of the offence and its implications for the future.

While there is much interest in the potential of restorative justice, Scotland lags far behind some of its near neighbours, most notably Northern Ireland.

In 2003, Northern Ireland introduced restorative justice at the core of the youth justice system. Since then there have been over 20,000 restorative conferences. It is reported that victims/those harmed are very satisfied, reoffending has been reduced and very few young people are sentenced to detention.

Lady Rae, who is honorary president of Glasgow & West of Scotland SASO (Scottish Association for the Study of Offending) will chair the event and the speaker will be Tim Chapman, chair of the board of the European Forum for Restorative Justice.
