Lawyers to gain insight into impact of porn addiction at CPD workshops

Overuse of internet pornography is fast emerging as a compulsive sexual behaviour disorder, in lockstep with the greater use of smartphones and easy access to streaming video in the past 10 years.

Lawyers are unaware that many of the issues they see in their cases are rooted in compulsive use of internet pornography: e.g. possession of indecent images of children; teens sexting; sexual harassment and the breakdown of relationships.

The workshops will be run by The Reward Foundation, an educational charity based in Edinburgh that looks at the science behind sex, love relationships and the brain’s reward system. They are accredited by the Royal College of General Practitioners and are each worth four hours’ CPD.

Attendees will be given an introduction to addiction in general and compulsive use of internet pornography in particular, based on the latest scientific research.

They will also learn about different types of physical health and mental health conditions related to pornography use emerging from the research, including the vulnerability of people on the autistic spectrum

The workshops, run by Mary Sharpe, Advocate and Darryl Mead, PhD, will encourage reflective discussion among practitioners about best practice and possible improvements and will signpost recovery options.

All attendees will receive a copy of the new edition of the book Your Brain on Porn, which details the science of pornography addiction.
