Major environmental law conference in Edinburgh next month

The United Kingdom Environmental Law Association (UKELA) annual Scottish conference is taking place in Edinburgh on Thursday 10 October 2019.

The conference is sponsored by Terra Firma Chambers, and Westwater Advocates are sponsoring five student places.

Environmental law covers a wide span, involving not just regulatory law and standards, but also impacts property law, the natural environment, and development.

Over the years the UKELA Scottish Conference has been the major environmental law event in Scotland, and this year is no exception.

The conference will be topical and informative, providing an environmental update for 2019 and looking ahead to 2020 and beyond. There will be presentations on the potential effect on environmental law of Brexit in addition to the recent Environmental Principles Consultation.

Robert Sutherland from Terra Firma Chambers will be presenting a case law review highlighting significant developments in Scotland and elsewhere, and Sir Crispin Agnew QC will be giving a talk on the meaning of sustainable development, which features in numerous Acts of the Scottish Parliament.

There will also be presentations on clean air emission zones, the implications of the 2021 ban on sending municipal biodegradable waste to landfill, and from SEPA on reforms to environmental authorisations.
