The Scottish government has paid over £500,000 in legal expenses to Alex Salmond over its botched inquiry into allegations of sexual harassment made against him.

It admitted breaching its own guidelines after the former first minister took the government to court over how it dealt with the accusations.

He is expected to go on trial next year.

A Scottish government spokesman confirmed that the final settlement would be for £512,250 for legal costs arising from the judicial review.

Mr Salmond said the complaints against him are “patently ridiculous”.
