Scottish prosecutors counselled for 'vicarious trauma' after abuse cases

Hundreds of Scottish prosecutors and case workers have been given counselling for “vicarious trauma” after working on abuse cases, The Times reports.

According to information released by the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS) in response to a Freedom of Information request, nearly 500 staff have received vicarious trauma counselling since 2016.

The figure includes three-quarters of advocates depute and two-thirds of specialist case workers, at a cost of around £40,000.

COPFS guidance states: “The provision of trauma support is necessary in assisting the service to meet its duty of care to individuals working with potentially traumatising information, images or situations, and to mitigate any long-term effects of such exposure.”
