Thorntons’ IP offering strengthened with arrival of associate

Thorntons has strengthened its intellectual property offering with the addition of a new associate.

Gemma Ogilvie joins the firm bringing with her experience in the field of commercial litigation, IP and media law.

This brings the firm’s Dundee and Edinburgh based IP and media team to 8 lawyers working solely in this practice area, one of the largest in Scotland.

Her specialist areas include IP litigation and Ms Ogilvie is one of only a handful of solicitors in Scotland with experience of conducting a patent litigation in the Court of Session.

She said: “I am fortunate in that I have first-hand knowledge of the issues of running a business. In 2013 I launched a fashion boutique in Edinburgh.

“Having this personal understanding of the challenges faced by start-ups and business owners, including brand creation, helps me to assist my clients in achieving their own goals.

“I am delighted to be joining a team that has a strong reputation in the industry and I am looking forward to bringing my own knowledge and experience to the firm.”

Ms Ogilvie joins Thorntons from Maclay Murray & Spens LLP and her work to date has included protecting and enforcing IPR such as trademarks, patents, copyright, designs and confidential information.

She advises clients of all sizes including individuals, SMEs, public and private sector clients, universities, well known brands and multinational companies.

Welcoming her, Lesley Larg, head of business law at Thorntons, said: “Gemma is a welcome addition to firm, bringing with her first hand expertise in contentious IP which will be of huge benefit.

“Her skills complement our existing intellectual property, IT and media offering and further strengthens the full legal service we can provide to our business clients.”

Gemma also features in the Scottish Legal News Annual Review 2015 in which she discusses managing her work as a lawyer with running her Stockbridge Boutique business.
