US firms continuing to grow London bases despite Brexit

US law firms are continuing to grow their bases in the UK, particularly London, in spite of Brexit, new figures suggest.

The total number of lawyers working in the UK at firms headquartered in the US rose by 22 per cent over the four years from 2016 to 2020, while the number of partners rose by 19 per cent, The Lawyer reports.

This brought the number of lawyers to a new record of 6,679 in 2020, nearly five per cent up on the previous year, and the number of partners to 2,012, up just over four per cent.

The biggest increases have been in Kirkland & Ellis and Goodwin Procter, both of which have more than doubled their headcount in the UK since 2016 to reach 335 and 109 respectively.

The 50 largest US firms now have an average of 39 partners and 134 lawyers in their London offices.
