Aberdeen Law Project’s Ruth Dale secures three-figure sum for client
A law student has successfully secured 1.5 times the value of a tenant’s deposit after a local landlord failed to protect the deposit in a scheme.
Ruth Dale, a member of the Aberdeen Law Project, represented her client in the First-tier Tribunal before going on to defeat the landlord’s appeal against the initial ruling in the Upper Tribunal.
Ms Dale managed to win her case that the client’s deposit should have been protected in a scheme and that the tribunal should make an award of 1.5 times the deposit’s value.
Delighted with the result, she said: “This was an interesting and exciting case from start to finish – the landlord had clearly breached the regulations in place to safeguard tenants. I was happy with the outcome, as was the tenant.
“I joined the Aberdeen Law Project and the representation team because I want to help people, I can’t think of a better way to help my community than through pro bono work.”
The tenant said: “I have enjoyed being represented by the Aberdeen Law Project. They were quick to respond, helpful and keen to help. The process was smooth, and I am glad I sought their help.”
The project’s representation supervisor, Adam Davies, added: “Ruth has shown great work ethic and dedication over and above what would be expected of many other second year students in order to get a great result for the client. This is a great example of the work ethic and dedication on offer at ALP.”
