Adopt a book, and help preserve Scott’s collection

A new adopt-a-book scheme has been launched by Abbotsford, home of Sir Walter Scott, to help preserve some of the significant works in his world-renowned library.

Scott was a member of the Faculty of Advocates and the Faculty’s long association with Abbotsford, his home near Melrose, is continued through the Faculty of Advocates Abbotsford Collection Trust which has care of around 9,000 books in the house’s library and other items.

Much has been done in recent times to help look after the books – such as stabilising environmental conditions in the house and having strict protocols for handling and consulting books – but some need sensitive repair and restoration.

A catalogue of 15 books in need of conservation has been prepared and the public is being offered a series of perks in return for sponsoring the costs.
