And finally… butt out

A city in China has been forced to scrap a scheme that allows members of the public to exchange cigarette butts for tissues, due to abuse.

Authorities in Shengzhou, Zhejiang Province, set up the exchange scheme in a bid to encourage people to pick up cigarette butts, offering a pack of tissues for every 50 turned in.

However, officials were soon overwhelmed by people who submitted thousands of cigarette butts of questionable origin.

And others suggested that the scheme encouraged smoking or could be seen as a subsidy to those who keep their own butts.
