Julius Malema, leader of South Africa’s Economic Freedom Fighters party, was in court in the city of East London charged with firing an automatic rifle in 2018.

He is alleged to have fired the shots at the party’s fifth birthday celebrations.

During an adjournment in proceedings, EFF supporters in the gallery stood up to wish Mr Malema a happy 41st birthday before singing and dancing and presenting him with a cake.
