The New Zealand Manuka Honey Appellation Society is trying to convince the UK Intellectual Property Office (IPO) that manuka honey can only come from New Zealand.

However, the certification trademark application is being resisted by Australian and British honey manufacturers, The Sunday Telegraph reports.

Jonathan Jones, managing director of trading at Cornwall-based Tregothnan, said: “You can’t make manuka honey without European honey bees. So the honey is as much European as it is from New Zealand.”

Rowse, which imports manuka honey from New Zealand for sale in the UK, said the trademark would have “a negative impact on competition, restrict global supply and potentially result in significant price increases”.
