Nick Adderley, the suspended chief constable of Northamptonshire Police, has been found guilty of gross misconduct by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), The Guardian reports.

His false claims included that he had served in the Royal Navy for 10 years instead of two, that he had attended the Britannia Royal Naval College – which in fact rejected his application – and that he had taken part in negotiations in Haiti, a country he had never visited.

For more than a decade, he also regularly wore the South Atlantic Medal awarded to those who served in the 1982 Falklands War. At the time, he was a sea cadet.

IOPC regional director Emily Barry said: “The panel’s findings show that Mr Adderley’s conduct had fallen well below the professional standards of any police officer, never mind a chief constable.”
