And finally… judge-made law
A judge has told a man he must marry his girlfriend or spend a fortnight in prison.
Josten Bundy, from Texas, was arrested after he punched his girlfriend’s ex-partner.
But judge Randall Rogers in Smith County gave him an unusual ultimatum in court – either he marry Elizabeth Jaynes, 19, within 30 days or be sent to prison for 15 days.
Ms Jaynes told KLTV: “My face was so red, people behind me were laughing.”
Mr Bundy requested permission to call his employer as he feared for his job if he was imprisoned but the judge denied his request – so he agreed to marry Ms Jaynes.
Due to the short notice, only a few people were able to attend the wedding last month.
Ms Jaynes wore a blue skirt and a white tank top while Mr Bundy wore a blue polo shirt.
The bride said: “It just felt like we weren’t going to be able to have the wedding we wanted
“It was just going to be kind of pieced together. I didn’t even have a white dress.”
Legal experts have raised concern at the validity of the judgment as well as the bail conditions which include, for some reason, writing out verses from the Bible.
Blake Bailey, a constitutional lawyer, explained that forced marriage is illegal and that a higher court would have struck down such a decision.
He said: “To say you’re not going to be criminally punished if you get married is way out of left field.
“It sounds like the old days of shotgun weddings, but not even the judge is capable of enforcing what he thinks is best for some people in his court.”
