Cocaine is as harmless as whiskey and only illegal “because it is made in Latin America”, the president of Colombia has said.
Gustavo Petro, who presides over the world’s largest producer of cocaine, claimed that scientists had analysed the drug and come to that conclusion, CBS News reports.
The drug “would be sold like wine” if it were legalised, the left-winger added.
Mr Petro made the remarks during a six-hour-long cabinet meeting which was broadcast live for the first time.
According to the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), cocaine production in Colombia has risen every year since 2013 and by 53 per cent from 2022 to 2023.
Global legalisation would facilitate the dismantling of the drug trafficking business, Mr Petro has suggested.
