And finally… say cheese

A huge Chilean cheese scam allegedly operated by a woman in Paris has been exposed.

Gilberte van Erpe, 74, stands accused of selling a nearly worthless powder to thousands of Chileans for millions of dollars, having promised them that the powder would produce a “magic cheese” used in cosmetics.

Customers were scammed into believing they could grow the magic cheese and then sell it on to cosmetics manufacturers for profit.

Cheese-making kits were sold for at least €350, though some of the 5,500 scam victims reportedly invested up to €168,000.

According to BBC News, it was a €14.5 million scam - one of the largest in Chile’s history.

Ms van Erpe was arrested in 2008 and is being tried in a court in Paris. Three of her alleged accomplices are also on trial.
