Apple is facing its first-ever EU fine of around €500 million for distorting competition in the music streaming market, according to reports.

The European Commission has been investigating Apple since 2020 in connection with its rules requiring the operators of music streaming apps like Spotify to use Apple’s own in-app purchase mechanism.

Apple also restricts app developers from informing iPhone and iPad users of alternative, cheaper purchasing possibilities.

The Commission is set to announce a fine in the region of €500 million early next month, according to FT.

If confirmed, it will be the first fine imposed on Apple by the Commission, which has imposed fines – including much larger fines – on most other Big Tech companies.
