Arnot Manderson welcomes Stephen Donnelly
Arnot Manderson Advocates has welcomed Stephen Donnelly to the stable following his admission to the Faculty of Advocates today.
Mr Donnelly has a broad background in civil litigation, with particular experience in public and commercial law as well as in appellate advocacy in all areas of law.
During devilling he worked on a large number of judicial reviews and commercial actions. He also worked on several matters involving EU law, including state aid, Francovich damages claims, and a high-profile reference before the European Court of Justice.
He joins the bar following a year spent as judicial assistant to Lord Kerr at the Supreme Court and the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council.
As a judicial assistant he gained invaluable experience, including a significant amount of drafting, on appeals and applications for permission to appeal across the full spectrum of civil, European, and criminal work.
As the only member of the Scottish bar to have served in that role, he is uniquely placed to provide advice and appellate advocacy in cases from the Sheriff Appeal Court onwards, including cases reaching the Court of Session for the first time on appeal.
Before coming to the bar, he trained at Simpson & Marwick, appearing regularly in the sheriff courts and working on cases spanning reparation, insurance disputes, and environmental regulation.
He subsequently worked in the international arbitration group in the Paris office of Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, dealing in particular with complex contractual and jurisdictional disputes.
Andrew Sutherland, practice manager at Arnot Manderson Advocates, said: “We are delighted to welcome Stephen to the Stable.
“His interest in the fields of Public Law and Commercial Law will naturally strengthen our depth in these areas.
“Stephen has an enviable CV, his unique background and in particular his considerable experience of appellate work will mean he will be highly valued by both solicitors and their clients alike, especially with the imminent arrival of the new court structures.
“We wish Stephen all the best for a long and successful career with the largest full service stable at the Scottish bar.”
