Whether we are early adopters or less than willing converts, technological advancement will doubtlessly have an increasing impact on the legal profession. This year’s Law and Technology Conference assesses the impact, opportunities and risks that emerging technologies bring to the sector.

The conference will open with keynote speaker Marie Bernard, Europe Director of Innovation at Dentons, who will tackle the question of how technology is changing legal practice.

A number of sessions throughout the day focus on specific technologies and their legal applications, including blockchain and big data. Dr Catrina Denvir (Director of Legal Innovation Centre at Ulster University) assesses the impact of AI (artificial intelligence) while John McKinlay (Head of UK Intellectual Property and Technology, DLA Piper) considers how cloud computing can improve lawyer-client service.

As clients and consumers become more tech-savvy, legal advisors will be expected to offer a similarly technologically well-informed perspective. Carolyn Jameson (Chief Legal Officer of home-grown travel unicorn Skyscanner) and Sinead King (Barrister, The 36 Group) set out what legal advice and services tech firms are looking for.

For those looking to develop or harness new technology, Professor Bill Buchanan (School of Computing, Edinburgh Napier University) and Joshua Ryan-Saha (Skills Lead, Data Lab) discuss what collaborative opportunities there may be with universities and tech firms.

With opportunity can of course come risks and there is a focus on cybersecurity in a session on phishing and ransomware attacks.

Improving access to justice through court technology and delivering a more efficient service by generating meaningful insights from your data are also on the agenda of what promises to be a comprehensive examination of technology’s impact on the legal profession.

The Law Society of Scotland’s Law and Technology Conference 2017 – or #LawscotTech – takes place in Edinburgh on Friday 13 October 2017. The conference is presented in partnership with Quorum Legal, LawWare, Leap, Sapphire and Nalytics. To secure your place book online here. SLN readers save 10% by using discount code SLN2017
