Claire Mitchell named new SCBA president

The vital role of defence counsel in the justice system has been highlighted by Claire Mitchell, new president of the Scottish Criminal Bar Association (SCBA).

Ms Mitchell (pictured) was elected at the SCBA annual meeting to take over from Thomas Ross, who stepped down after two years as president.

She had been vice-president to Mr Ross, and that office will now be filled by Tony Lenehan.

“I was honoured to have been nominated by the outgoing president, Thomas Ross, who has worked hard throughout his two years in office and has made a significant improvement to the promotion and protection of the interests of the criminal bar in Scotland.,” said Ms Mitchell.

“Along with vice-president, Tony Lenehan, and the committee, I hope to continue his work to ensure the views of the SCBA are represented in important issues affecting the bar, and also to promote the importance of the crucial and difficult work our members do representing the interests of those involved in the criminal justice system.”

In other changes, Gill Ross, secretary for five years, is replaced by Wendy Hay, while Gary Allan QC, Rosemary Guinnane, Donna Armstrong and Kelly Duling join the committee as Ximena Vengoechea steps down.

Craig Findlater continues in his role as treasurer.
