Clíona Kimber SC welcomes Scottish colleagues to Dublin for major employment law conference

Clíona Kimber SC, who lectured in law at the University of Aberdeen for eight years from 1993 to 2000, has been elected as chair of the Employment Bar Association at the Bar of Ireland. Ms Kimber is a Senior Counsel (equivalent to Queen’s Counsel) in Ireland, specialising in litigating in employment and equality law and is author of the leading Irish text on employment equality law. Her maternal grandmother was a native of Dunfermline.
To all my Scottish colleagues: I remember with fondness my years as a lecturer in the School of Law in the University of Aberdeen. During my time there the faculty were working towards achieving the highest results in the newly introduced rankings – which we achieved. I learned that teamwork is the essence of making excellent things happen.
Moreover, I received great training in communicating with students in an inspiring and convincing way – skills I have brought with me in my career at the Bar of Ireland. I will bring these twin inspirations with me in my two years term as chair of the Employment Bar Association (EBA) while continuing with my busy litigation practice.
Reaching world-class quality in legal scholarship and knowledge can bring a transformation to people’s careers, as I experienced in teaching Masters students from around the world. This is true equally in Ireland as it is in Scotland. The EBA has as its central goal the provision of excellence in continuing professional development for employment law barristers and the legal profession.
The EBA is an association of senior and junior counsel who are members of the Bar of Ireland. We specialise in employment, equality and labour law, in litigation and in advising and supporting employers and employees in resolving workplace disputes. We also provide continuing professional development in this technical and specialist area of law and organise events where our expert members can meet and exchange experience and knowledge.
One of my goals is to strengthen links with employment lawyers and litigators outside Ireland, in order to meet and share best practices in law and in the practice of advocacy.
With that in mind, I would like to invite all of my Scottish colleagues who have an interest in employment and equality law to come to our flagship annual Employment Law Conference on November 23rd at the Law Library in Dublin.
