Correction

On Monday 22 December 2014 in an article headlined “Figures show court closures have slowed justice system”, we reported that Forfar Sheriff Gregor Murray had said court staff were having to “fight” their way through a “chock-a-block” diary after the transfer of business to Forfar following the closure of Arbroath Sheriff Court.

We reported him as saying, in relation to a case that had been going on for over two years, that: “This case is heading into its third year. This would be the second occasion in succession in which you are faced with an accommodation problem in terms of timetable. It is incumbent on those who administer the courts to fund and resource them sufficiently. If somebody has chosen to shut down a local court then so be it but there are consequences to that decision. This is now the second occasion where the lack of court time has meant we have been unable to have this trial.”

However, the comments attributed to Sheriff Murray were in fact made by the solicitor for the accused.

We are happy to make this clarification and apologise for the error.
