Crown Office named top public sector employer in LGBT equality index

The Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS) has been named top public sector employer in Scotland for the fifth year running and 15th overall in the UK in the 2018 Stonewall UK Workplace Equality Index.

Sixteen law firms also featured among the UK’s top 100 LGBT-inclusive employers, according to Stonewall.

Pinsent Masons ranks number two for a third year in the LGBT charity’s annual list, followed by Baker McKenzie at number six (up from seven) and Berwin Leighton Paisney (BLP) at number seven (up from eight).

All three firms have also received special commendation as one of the UK’s best employers for trans and non-binary staff — marking the first time that Stonewall has rated employers on trans inclusivity.

The official launch of the Workplace Equality Index and an awards presentation took place at a ceremony in London last night and was attended by representatives of COPFS.

Speaking ahead of the event, David Harvie, Crown Agent at COPFS said: “I am very proud to learn that for the fifth year running the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service has been identified in Stonewall’s Workplace Equality Index as the top public sector organisation in Scotland.

“This fantastic result recognises our long-held commitment to developing and sustaining a diverse workforce in an environment that is welcoming and inclusive. It acknowledges our engagement with the wider LGBTI community in the development of our policies and good practice and to the vision and work of dedicated staff across the Service.

“Despite our year on year success as top public sector employer in Scotland we are not and never will be complacent. We will continue to work with colleagues in the criminal justice system to improve access to justice for the LGBTI community and to promote inclusion in the workplace.”
