Data leaks at Crown Office skyrocket
Data leaks at the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service have nearly doubled in the past year to more than 150.
Some of the data breaches were so egregious they were reported to the Information Commissioner’s Officer (ICO).
The breaches involved the “accidental or unlawful destruction, loss, alteration” or “unauthorised disclosure” of personal information.
A Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service report showed that one in five of the data leaks were related to victims and that two out of five related to witness data.
A data breach as defined by the ICO is a breach of security leading to loss, unauthorised disclosure and destruction of data. The figures include “deliberate” breaches.
Data breaches have risen by an incredible 76 per cent from the figure of 88 in 2020-21.
The Crown Office said: “Where any breach occurs it is looked at carefully in order that any possible lessons are learned.”
Scottish Conservative justice spokesman Jamie Greene said that the “mistakes” point to “a culture of overwhelmed Crown Office staff struggling with the effects of SNP cuts”.
