Dean of Faculty warns members over culture of misogyny

Roddy Dunlop QC

Advocates who engage in sexist and chauvinist behaviour must not be protected by their fellow members, Dean of Faculty, Roddy Dunlop QC, has said.

Writing to advocates, he voiced concerns over allegations of entrenched misogyny at the bar.

Mr Dunlop added: “What I can say, without equivocation, is misogyny is, as with any prejudice, wholly unacceptable. I should be distressed in the extreme to find there was any such culture, or that apprehension thereof is — as has again been suggested — deterring women from entering the profession.

“In that regard, I would stress to all members the need to avoid any discrimination and to report any instances thereof if they arise.”

He said members had a duty to report misconduct and that any confirmed instances of discrimination would be dealt with seriously.
