Derek Couper joins Slater and Gordon
Slater and Gordon’s presence in Scotland is continuing to grow with the addition of a leading name in clinical negligence to its team.
Derek Couper becomes the firm’s new head of medical negligence in Scotland, having built a reputation as a specialist in clinical negligence work through settling some of the largest and most complex cases in Scotland in recent years.
He joins Slater and Gordon at a time of development for the firm, with its Edinburgh office continuing to grow and see involvement in increasing numbers of high-profile cases from across the country.
In one of its most recent cases to attract national attention, the firm had a complaint to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) upheld on behalf of one of its clients, around the use of WhatsApp by a hospital consultant rather than them attending a mother shortly before she gave birth. The baby sadly died a number of days later.
Mr Couper said: “I am delighted to be joining Slater and Gordon, a firm with a strong presence and highly esteemed track record in supporting clients across Scotland.
“It’s great to join such a dynamic team and I look forward to working as part of that to continue to fight for the answers and outcomes our clients need and deserve.”
Stuart Cochran, head of Slater and Gordon in Scotland, added: “Derek has an excellent reputation for his work in clinical negligence and is regarded in the highest terms for his legal ability and client focus.
“These attributes are absolutely central to everything we do at Slater and Gordon, and we’re really pleased to add a real leader in his field to the team.
“Derek’s experience and expertise will strengthen our offering even further, and will support our ongoing growth and development in working with individuals and families across the country.”
