ECtHR welcomes Faculty delegation
A very unexpected but welcome surprise greeted a Faculty delegation on a visit to the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg.
The visit co-incided with the hearing before the Grand Chamber of the Jean Charles de Menezes case.
He was shot dead in London by police who thought he was a suicide bomber, and his family is challenging a decision not to prosecute anyone over the death.
The delegation took the chance to observe proceedings and, after the judges took their seats, the President of the Court, Dean Spielmann, offered a public welcome to visiting parties, specifically mentioning the “Faculty of Advocates from Scotland”.
James Wolffe QC, Dean of Faculty, who is leading the delegation, said: “Scotland’s advocates are committed to defending the rights and freedoms of others.
“The Faculty has organised a visit to the European Court of Human Rights so that advocates can obtain a direct insight into the work of the Court.
“I was very pleased to hear the President of the Court welcome the Faculty’s delegation at the start of the hearing.”
