England: Next DPP Max Hill QC promises to 'restore public trust' in prosecution body

The next Director of Public Prosecutions, Max Hill QC, has promised to “restore public trust in the Crown Prosecution Service” following a series of high-profile disclosure failings leading to collapsed trials.

Mr Hill’s appointment to the post was announced yesterday by the Attorney General, Geoffrey Cox QC.

He has been the independent reviewer of terrorism legislation since last March and heads up Red Lion Chambers in London.

Mr Hill said: “This is a challenging time for the CPS, with the rise in complex cases and negative publicity about its handling of disclosure in some cases.

“I have seen first-hand the sterling work of the CPS and I am determined to restore public trust in all of its work.”

Lord Macdonald of River Glaven, a former DPP himself, said: “Unlike these deckchair generals, Max Hill has put terrorists in jail. And he’s done it fairly and squarely. Anyone who thinks he’s soft is in for a shock.”

Chris Henley, QC, vice-chairman of the Criminal Bar Association, said: “In Max Hill, QC, the CPS will have at its helm at a time of critical change a first class legal brain steeped in proven experience at the highest level in both prosecution and defence work, who can re-energise a fundamental pillar of the criminal justice system.”
