European citizens back future EU membership for Scotland

A YouGov poll found that more than 8,400 people across six countries strongly supported Scotland joining the EU in the future.

The poll asked: “Would you endorse or reject Scotland joining the EU if it became separate from Great Britain?”

The survey queried respondents in France, Germany, Sweden, Finland, Demark and the UK.

Seventy-one per cent of the 2,045 Germans who responded said they would back Scotland’s entry into the EU.

In France, of the 1,008 respondents, 61 per cent answered that they too would support an independent Scotland’s place in the EU.

Meanwhile in Denmark 67 per cent would support Scottish membership, 66 per cent in Finland, 64 per cent in Sweden but only 46 per cent in Norway.

However, the lowest level of support was in the UK: 41 per cent, with 29 per cent against future EU membership for Scotland.

A second question found that 72 per cent of Germans, 68 per cent of the French and 75 per cent of British people think it is either “somewhat” or “very likely” Scotland would vote for independence in a second referendum.

Joan McAlpine MSP, convener of the Scottish Parliament’s European and External Relations Committee, said: “From France and Germany to Finland and Sweden, it’s clear there is strong support right across Europe for Scotland’s EU membership.

“The First Minister has said Scotland wants to play a positive, constructive, outward-looking role in Europe, and it’s clear this message is being heard by citizens across the EU.”
