Event: Fossil Fuel Litigation for a Safe Climate
CPD 1.5 hours
PEAT Outcome - Relevant legal knowledge
The climate crisis is worsening. It threatens the enjoyment of human rights worldwide. Those who have the least responsibility for causing the crisis often suffer most severely.
Many companies and governments involved in the extraction and production of fossil fuels are committed to projects which are incompatible with a safe climate.
UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres has described the fossil fuel industry as “the polluted heart of the climate crisis”, and has called for the phasing out of fossil fuels “…in a just and equitable way — moving to leave oil, coal and gas in the ground where they belong – and massively boosting renewable investment in a just transition”.
Litigation over fossil fuels is one approach which has been taken by those trying to challenge the fossil fuel industry and maintain a safe climate.
This event will hear from lawyers involved in litigation over fossil fuel extraction and production, and will discuss the opportunities for similar litigation in Scotland.
It will be of interest to lawyers, law students and those with an interest in human rights and the climate crisis.
