Faculty ‘privileged’ to play part in human rights event
The Faculty of Advocates was “privileged” to play a part in a successful event to give young people a better grasp on human rights.
The Cyrenians’ Scottish Centre for Conflict Resolution (SCCR), supported by the Faculty, staged the seminar, “The Human Cost of Conflict – an Insight and Understanding of Human Rights”, in the Faculty’s Mackenzie Building in Edinburgh.
Speakers included Lady Dorrian, Ailsa Carmichael QC, and Stephen O’Rourke, as well as Tam Baillie, the Children and Young People’s Commissioner in Scotland, and Jordan Linden MSYP, chair of the Scottish Youth Parliament.
Ms Carmichael said: “I was delighted to have the opportunity to work with SCCR and with a group of young people who were so very engaged and motivated.
“The event provided a chance for them to think more deeply about how fundamental rights are their rights, and how those rights can be relevant to matters that are important to them in their lives.”
Mr O’Rourke added: “It was great to see a good number of young people engaging with human rights issues and growing their awareness of rights and responsibilities within wider society.
“And once again it was a privilege for the Faculty to be involved in the work of the Scottish Centre for Conflict Resolution by providing a venue and having a number of advocates facilitating the discussions throughout the day.”
