Faculty to host International Women’s Day talk
Lady Wolffe is to be the guest speaker at the Faculty of Advocates’ International Women’s Day event, when she pays tribute to pioneering women in the law and looks to the future.
In the talk, International Women’s Day: Celebration and Challenges, Lady Wolffe will reflect on her own experience, both as the first US-born member of the Scottish judiciary and as the first woman appointed as a Commercial Judge in the Court of Session.
The event is on Friday, 8 March, in the library of the Royal Faculty of Procurators in Glasgow, with the talk starting at 6pm.
After obtaining a Bachelor of Arts degree at Dartmouth College, Hanover, New Hampshire, Sarah LaBudde moved to England to continue her studies at Oxford. She met and married James Wolffe and they made their home in Edinburgh, where she attended Edinburgh University. She took the graduate LLB in 1989 and the Diploma in Legal Practice in 1990.
Mrs Wolffe called to the bar in 1994 and took silk in 2008. She was elevated to the bench in 2014 and took the title, Lady Wolffe. She now sits as one of the commercial judges.
She said: “I am very honoured to be asked to speak at the invitation of the Faculty on International Women’s Day. We have much to celebrate in the examples of the pioneering women who led the way in the profession.
“However, there are still challenges facing women today. I welcome the opportunity to reflect on our foremothers, as well as the future prospects for women to continue to contribute fully to professional life and take their place at the highest levels in the profession.”
Admission to the talk is free. To register, see here.
