FAI court process begins for Shotts prison death

The Crown Office has lodged a first notice to begin the court process for a fatal accident inquiry (FAI) into the death of 36-year-old James Stevenson.
Mr Stevenson died on 11 October 2021 at HMP Shotts. He was in legal custody and in the care of the state at the time of his death.
A preliminary hearing will be held on 2 April 2025 at Hamilton Sheriff Court.
Procurator fiscal Andy Shanks, who leads on deaths investigations for the Crown Office, said: “The lord advocate considers that the death of James Stevenson occurred while in legal custody and as such a fatal accident inquiry is mandatory.
“The lodging of the first notice enables FAI proceedings to commence under the direction of the sheriff.”
