Five to be prosecuted for threats against judge in Marine Le Pen case

Five people are facing prosecution for allegedly threatening the judge who barred far-right leader Marine Le Pen from running in the 2027 French presidential election.

Judge Bénédicte de Perthuis, who sentenced Ms Le Pen on Monday, was granted special police protection in response to online threats from her furious supporters.

According to The Times, Marie-Suzanne Le Quéau, the public prosecutor for the Paris appeal court, has announced that five people have been “tracked down and will be severely punished”.

Both Judge de Perthuis and the two assisting judges in the case “have been victims of online harassment and threats on social media”, she added.

Ms Le Pen was barred from running for political office for five years following her conviction for embezzling European parliamentary funds for use by her political party, National Rally (RN).

She was also given a four-year sentence suspended for two years, which she will be allowed to serve with an electronic tag instead of in prison, and slapped with a €100,000 fine.

Ms Le Pen has promised to appeal and a ruling in her appeal is expected by summer 2026 at the latest.
