A 93-year-old former Nazi has gone on trial in Germany over charges he helped kill hundreds of people at the Stutthof concentration camp near the end of the war.
Bruno Dey, who was an SS guard as a teenager, appeared in Hamburg youth court yesterday to deliver a prepared statement, The Times reports.
He is expected to make a total of 12 court appearances over the next two months, appearing for up to only two hours at a time due to ill health.
Mr Dey, who denies complicity in the murder of 5,230 prisoners at the Stutthof camp, told the court that the trial was “destroying” the end of his life.
He added: “I saw many bodies in the concentration camp. At the time, however, I did not know whether the prisoners had been killed or had died of natural causes. The images of misery and horror have haunted me all my life.”
