Four new staff appointed to Glasgow University School of Law

A graduate of Stellenbosch, Aberdeen and the University of South Africa (Unisa), Ms Esser is an attorney of the High Court of South Africa and has, prior to relocating to the UK, held the post of full professor in company law at Unisa.

While at Unisa, she was awarded the “Women in Research Award” and the “Principal’s Prize for Excellence in Research”.

She is currently professor extraordinarius of Unisa and visiting professor at the Open University.

Her research focus is on the legal aspects of corporate social responsibility and stakeholder protection and she has published extensively on these topics.

George (Georgios) Pavlakos, who currently holds a fractional appointment in the school, will join us as a full-time professor in the academic year 2015-16 following a four-month research stay at the European University Institute, Florence as Fernand Braudel senior fellow.

Mr Pavlakos is currently research professor in globalisation and legal theory at the University of Antwerp, a post which he has held since 2007.

A graduate of Athens, Kiel and Edinburgh, Mr Pavlakos has previously taught at Queen’s University Belfast and has held positions as a visiting professor at Kiel and as senior research fellow at the Czech Academy of Sciences.

He is co-editor of the journal Jurisprudence and general editor of the book series Law and Practical Reason.

His publications include Our Knowledge of the Law (2007), New Essays on the Normativity of Law (2011) and Reasons and Intentions in Law and Practical Agency (2015).

Jill Robbie will join the school as lecturer in private law on the 1 August 2015.

Ms Robbie graduated with an LLB from the University of Edinburgh, winning the “Lord President Cooper Memorial Prize” (jointly with Andrew Tickell) for the most distinguished honours graduate, before completing a PhD at the same institution.

Having also completed the Diploma in Legal Practice, she is currently a trainee solicitor with Brodies LLP.

Her monograph, Private Water Rights, will be published by the Edinburgh Legal Education Trust as part of its “Studies in Scots Law” series later in 2015.

Florence Thepot will join the school as lecturer in competition and EU law on 1 September 2015.

A graduate of Sciences-Po and the College of Europe, Ms Thepot completed a PhD at University College London in 2014, with the title The Interaction Between Competition Law and Corporate Governance: Opening the ‘Black Box’.

She has taught competition law at UCL and was awarded the “Young Writers’ Award” for her article “Market power in online search and social-networking: a matter of two-sided markets” (2013) 36 World Competition 195.
