Frances McMenamin QC to deliver keynote speech at SYLA conference

The senior woman practising at the Scottish bar, Frances McMenamin QC, will pass on some of her experience to the next generation when she delivers the keynote address at the annual conference of the Scottish Young Lawyers’ Association (SYLA).

Ms McMenamin worked for eight years in the Procurator Fiscal Service before being admitted to the Faculty of Advocates in 1985. One of the highlights of her early years as an advocate was serving as junior counsel for the Crown in the Lockerbie Inquiry.

She took silk in 1998, while serving three years as advocate depute. She has held a variety of appointments, including temporary sheriff and visiting lecturer at the Scottish Police College, and membership of bodies such as the Scottish Criminal Cases Review Commission, the Lord Justice General’s Criminal Court Rules Council and the Lord Bonomy Review Group on Post Corroboration Safeguards.

The SYLA conference, near Glasgow on 14 May, is titled, “Progression in the Profession: Towards 2020” and Ms McMenamin will discuss, “20 Years of Progression: Lessons learned and looking towards the next.”
