From Advocate General to Moderator – an interview with Lord Wallace of Tankerness

Lord Wallace of Tankerness

Thursday 3 June 2021, 7.30 – 8.30pm

The Lawyers’ Christian Fellowship in Scotland is delighted to welcome Jim Wallace, Baron Wallace of Tankerness to an evening of questions and discussion.

Jim Wallace has a distinguished career as a lawyer and politician. Born in Annan and educated in Scotland, he took a degree in economics and law at Cambridge University before returning to study law at Edinburgh.

He practised law as an advocate until election to Parliament in 1983 for the constituency of Orkney and Shetland.

Lord Wallace served as an MP for 18 years, becoming the leader of the Scottish Liberal Democrats in 1992, an office he held until 2005.

When the Scottish Parliament was established he became Deputy First Minister of Scotland, a post he occupied for six years. Elevated to the House of Lords in 2007, from 2013 until 2015 he served as Deputy Leader of the House of Lords.

Between 2010 and 2015 Jim was Advocate General for Scotland. A longstanding Elder of the Church of Scotland at St Magnus Cathedral, Kirkwall, he was nominated to be Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland for 2021–2022. It is highly unusual for a lay person to be nominated as Moderator. This has only happened three times since 1567.

He will be interviewed by Janys Scott QC and will answer questions about his life, faith, aspirations for the Church of Scotland and his views on pressing issues for Christian lawyers.

The event will take place on Zoom.  Places will be available via Eventbrite by clicking here.

Details are available on the LCF website.
