Gilson Gray celebrates Carmichael landmark trial win
Gilson Gray LLP said it is delighted with today’s decision of the Election Court, which upheld the election of its client, Alistair Carmichael, as MP for the Orkney & Shetland constituency and opened up the prospect of significant changes to public access of high profile trials.
The firm’s litigation team was lead by partner, Rosie Walker, with support from Keith Anderson and Iain Grant. The team worked closely with counsel, Roddy Dunlop QC and Ross Anderson, in achieving today’s successful outcome.
The court heard evidence from witnesses over three days, in what was the first case of its kind in Scotland for 50 years.
Legal argument was heard in September, and it marked the first time that a UK court hearing has been broadcast live and in full.
Ms Walker said: “Not only was this the first case of its type in Scotland for 50 years, but it raised a number of novel legal questions and has brought this area of electoral law into sharp public focus.
“It has also opened up the possibility of significant change to future media coverage of litigation in Scotland.”
Managing partner, Glen Gilson, said: “This decision reflects the dedication and ability of our legal team and their commitment to securing the very best results for our clients.
“It is a great honour to have been successfully involved in one of the most significant Scottish litigations in recent history.”
