Glasgow lawyer David McRae sets out family experience of cancer ahead of charity fundraiser
Glasgow lawyer David McRae, managing director of Just Employment Law, has spoken about his family experience of pancreatic cancer ahead of a major fundraising event for Pancreatic Cancer Scotland (PCS).
Mr McRae, whose mother passed away three years ago this June, was inspired to start fundraising for the charity after learning about the low survival rates for pancreatic cancer.
Less than a fifth of people with pancreatic cancer survive for a year, fewer than five per cent survive for five years, and only one per cent survive for more than a decade - with no significant improvement over the past 40 years.
The statistics are often attributed to the lack of early detection signs for pancreatic cancer, with most sufferers being diagnosed too late for medics to stand a realistic chance of saving them.
Charities such as Pancreatic Cancer Scotland aim to change this by helping to fund research; lobbying politicians; raising awareness of the need for early intervention; raising awareness of the condition generally; and highlighting the lack of funding being made available to make a real difference.
Mr McRae and his colleagues at Just Employment Law raised almost £60,000 for the charity at a Glitzy Summer Ball at the Radisson Blu in 2017, which was attended by some 500 guests.
Buoyed by its success, the firm is now returning to the Radisson Blu on 15 June 2019 to host another 500 guests - with help from Des Clarke and Tam Cowan - in the hopes of heightening awareness of the charity and its aims as well as raising much-needed funds.
Mr McRae said: “We are delighted to once again be hosting a Summer Ball. Not only did we lose my mother in 2016 but we also lost my younger brother, Colin. My aim, as it has been from the outset, is to honour their memories by assisting Pancreatic Cancer Scotland to the very best of my ability.
“We are extremely humbled by the support we receive from friends, family, clients and from the wider business community. Our friends at Belmont Group are also partnering with us, to make someone’s night by handing over a brand new car. We very much look forward to handing over the keys on the evening of the Ball.
“We are certain that the event on 15th June will prove to be another memorable evening and hopefully another milestone in the battle to combat this devastating disease.”
