Glasgow solicitor speaks of fright following Italy earthquake
“I had no idea what was going on.
“Then Sarah woke up and we just sat in shock, wondering what was going on.”
He added: “We had a quick look around and there seemed to be no damage.
“But then about half an hour later there was another tremor, an aftershock, but it wasn’t quite as strong.”
According to reports, there have been at least 37 deaths, with a number of small villages near the epicentre demolished.
Pescara del Tronto, a hamlet, is said to have been flattened, with 150 people missing.
The town of Amatrice, 65 miles northeast of Rome, was devastated.
Sergio Perozzi, the town’s mayor, told RAI radio: “Half the town is gone.
“The roads in and out of town are cut off. There are people under the rubble. There’s been a landslide and a bridge might collapse.”
In addition, a family of four, including a baby, are feared dead. Survivors have been evacuated and the town’s damaged hospital has been closed. The injured are being sent to other hospitals, including as far away as Rome.
