GMB union judges’ branch breaks elects officers
The UK’s first union branch specifically for judges has elected its union officers and committee.
Members of the GMB met on Tuesday 27 June and filled all vacant posts.
The branch now aims to set about working in the interests of judges and of “diversity equality and inclusion” in the judiciary as well as to protect and improve working conditions, terms and conditions and welfare.
The elected president is District Judge (retired) Claire Gilham and the branch secretary is Master Victoria McCloud of the High Court King’s Bench Division.
Stuart Fegan, GMB senior organiser, said: “This is yet another landmark day as GMB continues to break new ground in offering trade union support to an industry where this has never previously been possible.
“GMB will now be reaching out to the Ministry of Justice, Court Service and the relevant ministers and others as well as the Senior Judiciary, Judicial Office and professional bodies to forge constructive working relationships in the interests of its members.
“This historic election marks the beginning of a new period of improved professionalism and independence in the representation of all judges’ interests and that of the court and legal system.”
