Harper Macleod has become an official Proud Supporter of Team Shetland ahead of its bid for glory at the NatWest Island Games XVII in Gotland, Sweden.

The Shetland Island Games Association (SIGA) is sending a team of 129 competitors and officials for this year’s games, with the opening ceremony taking place on 24 June.

The Island Games are held every two years, with 2015 Games in Jersey one of the largest games ever, with around 3,000 participants involved from 24 competing islands including Bermuda, the Falklands, Rhodes and St Helena.

Professor Lorne Crerar, chairman of Harper Macleod who was himself an official at the last year’s Rio Olympics, said: “Sport is very much part of our firm’s DNA so we are delighted to be backing Team Shetland as the athletes represent the islands at such a fantastic event. We know the value of sport to individuals and to the wider community and what it means to strive to be the best you can be, and it’s great to be able to support the team as they do us proud.

“Over the years Team Shetland has punched above its weight in terms of achievement, and we wish every competitor the best for their events.”

Team Shetland will compete in eleven sports during the games week – archery, athletics, badminton, cycling, men’s football, golf, gymnastics, shooting, swimming, table tennis and triathlon – with Shetland competitors taking part in over 130 different events.
